Richard Bachmann
Richard Bachmann was born in Chicago and moved to Toronto in 1970. He studied English Literature at Trent University and later received a Masters degree at McMaster. He wrote his thesis on Henry James’s The Ambassadors.
Bachmann’s career as a bookseller began, but briefly, in a porno shop on Toronto’s Yonge Street. However, it was more seriously pursued in Ottawa (Prospero Books), Cambridge, England (Heffers), and Burlington. For 25 years he was the owner of Burlington’s A Different Drummer Books. During that time he was named Bookseller of the Year (Libris Award) and received national recognition for book promotion (Jack Award).
Early in 2010, Bachmann retired, selling A Different Drummer to Ian Elliot, a long-time employee. Since then he has been reading more books.
