The Affordable Housing Challenge: How Did We Get Here and An Assessment of Current Government Policies

The presentation will provide an insight into the basics of the housing market as it pertains to our current affordable housing situation. This is provided to gain an understanding of the underlying causes of the current situation. Understanding the causes for the current situation provides the basis by which current government policies, Provincial and Federal, will be evaluated in terms of their ability to address the components of the affordable housing problem. It is important to understand that different polices are required to address affordable market” housing and affordable non-markethousing. In addition to the Provincial and Federal policies, consideration must be given regarding the role that local government can play from the policy perspective. Finally, consideration will be given to what additional policy directions may be undertaken by the various levels of government.
